Yubo scales real-time audio moderation technology across four major international markets

Industry-first Gen Z social discovery app expands audio moderation for live streams in the UK, Australia And Canadafollowing its US launch this summer

PARIS, November 16, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Yubo, the live social discovery app for Gen Z, has expanded its audio moderation technology for live streams in four of its largest markets: the United Statesthe United Kingdom, AustraliaAnd Canada. In collaboration with Hive, Yubo introduced this technology in the United States at the end of May, becoming the first major social media platform in the world to address the challenges of real-time audio analysis.

While significant progress has been made in advancing real-time image and video moderation technology, audio moderation has remained an unsolved challenge. According to a report from the Anti-Defamation League, about half of the people who reported experiencing harassment in online games – where live streaming has historically been prevalent – were targeted with the voice.

Yubo has since expanded the trial phase to include all majority English-speaking regions where it has a large user base, reaching a critical turning point to gather substantial information about this revolutionary security tool. While still in its infancy, the technology has proven particularly effective at detecting potential real-world risks, such as violence toward others or self-harm.

Hive’s audio moderation technology on Yubo currently works by automatically recording and transcribing 10-second snippets of audio in live streams from 10 or more people. The text is then instantly scanned using artificial intelligence. Only transcripts containing words or phrases that violate the app’s Community Guidelines are flagged for review by Yubo’s security specialists, who begin investigating incidents in real-time to determine what actions should be taken, including need to contact the police. Transcripts without suspected violations are not reviewed or retained.

The algorithms that power this audio moderation technology use machine learning and will therefore continue to improve and become more accurate over time. To protect user privacy, live stream transcripts that have not been marked for investigation are deleted after 24 hours. Transcripts that are flagged and require an internal or law enforcement investigation are stored for up to one year.

“Our expansion of audio moderation technology is not only a key element of Yubo’s evolving security product roadmap, but a critical development in expanding the metrics of online safety industry-wide,” said Yubo Chief Operating Officer Marc-Antoine Durand. “There is still a lot to do in the area of voice detection, but we are proud to pave a path for our colleagues by being the first to launch audio moderation with Hive and helping make this tool more reliable and effective through this process» .

Yubo first rolled out audio moderation technology this summer to a small cross-section of users in the United States. With increased scale across four primary markets, audio moderation keywords now trigger an average of 600 live streams per day for review by security specialists. However, a significant proportion of these constitute “false positives”. False positives refer to cases where, for example, a song playing in the background or playful language containing triggering keywords is flagged for review, but they are not actually cases of harmful speech. False positives highlight not only the complexity of effective online content moderation, but also the importance of combining technical tools with human oversight for nuance and context. That’s why in Yubo human moderators always have the final say on what moderation action to take and continuously oversee the detection algorithms.

“Effective content moderation is a responsibility we know firsthand is of the utmost importance to Yubo. We are excited to power its ecosystem with our technology and learn together how to make online communities safer through continued innovation.” , said the chief executive officer of Hive. Kevin Guo.
