London (CNN) – From Covid to chaos, it’s been another rough year for the aviation industry. Across much of the Northern Hemisphere, the busy summer season has been plagued by delays and cancellations, while in the United States a new study this week found that passenger satisfaction with airplanes is waning across the board.

However, as we approach the quieter travel months of September and October, there was cause for celebration in London on Friday as industry leaders gathered at the Langham Hotel for the 2022 Skytrax World Airline Awards – the first time that the event has been held in person since 2019.

Skytrax, a UK-based airline and airport review and ranking site, conducted over 14 million customer surveys in more than 100 countries between September 2021 and August 2022 to find out the current favorite airline in the world .

This year’s winner was no stranger to the podium. The new Qatar Airways has won the top prize a total of seven times since the awards were introduced in 1999. The Qatar-based airline also collected eight more gongs on Friday, including Best Business Class, Best Business Class Seat and Best Business Class Dining Room. It will be a lot to bring back with hand luggage.

Just two months ago, the carrier took first place in’s ranking of the best airlines in the world.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker thanked his “amazing employees” for “their continued dedication and guidance” and said that “winning these awards in the same year that we celebrate our 25th anniversary is even more rewarding “.

Shortly after receiving the award, he told CNN Travel that the secret to the airline’s enduring success was: “Consistent service, consistent product, constant attention to passengers and absolute dedication from everyone working in the airline.”

A regular on the “best of” lists, Emirates was number 3 on Skytrax’s 2022 rankings.

Singapore Airlines, the new No. 2 in the world according to the Skytrax survey, it also won nine awards, including best cabin crew, best first class seat, best first class seat and best first class catering.

Ryanair’s surprise

UAE flag carrier Emirates ranked third and was also awarded for best in-flight entertainment, best economy class, best economy class catering and best premium economy class seat.

Japan’s ANA (All Nippon Airways) came in at number 4 and was even named the cleanest airline in the world – it’s no small feat when two years of Covid-19 meant customers are paying particular attention to standards of hygiene and cleanliness. It has won four other awards, including Best Airport Services.

Australian airline Qantas came fifth in the survey of more than 350 airlines, conducted in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese.

Delta Air Lines was the leading airline in the United States, winning six region-specific award categories, while Turkish Airlines was the first airline in Europe, taking home four awards including the highly competitive Best Airline in Europe title.

In one of the biggest upheavals of the day, Irish airline Ryanair, which has never been afraid of wooing controversy in its 37-year history, triumphed at the awards for the first time, claiming the crown for best low-cost airline in the world. Europe. This success with customers is in large part due to the fact that it emerged as one of the most trusted airlines in the region this summer, canceling relatively few flights and even offering “rescue” flights in July and August to help stranded people. from the cancellations of their competitors.

Albertine Murasira, RwandAir’s flight attendant, who won the award for best service for an airline’s staff in Africa, said the award would encourage the carrier to raise standards even further.

Because it’s an award for “the best employees, this is a big win for us,” he told CNN. “It will encourage us to continue taking care of our passengers.”

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, said that while the awards celebrated the best of aviation, the industry was still dealing with Covid tension, staff shortages and rising fuel prices caused by the conflict in Ukraine.

“All in all, they weren’t the happiest times in many ways,” he told the audience of the ceremony.

Airlines do not pay any entry or registration fees to be eligible for awards, and all costs of the survey and award event are paid by Skytrax. For the full list of winners, visit the Skytrax website.
