Community Focus: Kujay> News

Happy Friday, Guardians! Welcome back to one of our favorite segments on Bungie.net, this week’s Community Focus! This week we’re chatting with a content creator who has a pretty cool job, Kujay!

Hi Kujay! Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! So, let’s start with a little background. Who are you, what are your pronouns and where do you come from?

Hi, my name is Kujay (he / he). I am an aircraft designer by day ea Destiny content creator by sunset! I grew up in a small town in eastern Kansas before moving to Southern California after college.

Wait, airplane designer? Yes, we’ll have to touch it in a moment. But first, what led you to create games and content?

I started playing at an early age when I was only four. I had just started going to daycare and there was a Super Nintendo that all the kids could play with. The first game I ever played was The island of Yoshi (still a great game to this day!), and good god, I was instantly hooked! Fast forward about 20 years, and after moving to SoCal, I found myself with MUCH more free time than I was used to in school (aerospace engineering courses are no joke!). Then, shortly after Rise of Iron launched, a friend of mine who was streaming started asking me to try streaming for myself. After rejecting it for a few months, I finally gave in and bought a PS4 webcam. I’ve found streaming to be a lot of fun (and something I’m really good at), so much so that I’ve been doing it for almost six years!

Looks like my kind of daycare. 😊 Okay, big question here: how do you balance both a full-time job and content creation?

Over the years it has been difficult to reconcile my professional career with the content creation side of my life. In the early years, I was streaming A LOT more, streaming every Friday and Monday (usually involving a lot of Trials of Osiris support!). However, as the years went by and the responsibilities for my daily work began to grow, I began to reduce the amount of content I was pushing out. I’ve started focusing more on YouTube in the past couple of years, because it’s something I can tear apart, instead of spinning the camera for a live stream. And on the Twitch side of the house, I’m now primarily a “weekend warrior”, streaming only on Saturdays and Sundays. It has been difficult to juggle the two sides of my life, but also HUGE rewarding. How many people manage to design airplanes during the week and then come home to a hit stream and YouTube channel over the weekend? It’s something I don’t take for granted!

Gee, it just feels like such a wild ride, and it looks like you’ve done a great job of maintaining it. So, you mentioned Yoshi’s Island, but how did you find it Destiny?

So, interestingly enough, I had actually taken a long hiatus from gaming when Destiny came calling. After bingeing on Skyrim in my senior year of high school, I didn’t play much in my freshman or sophomore year of college. However, I was recalled by the PS4 remaster of The Last of Us (AMAZING game by the way!), Which I never got a chance to play when it originally launched. And then, as per “destiny” (wink), a few days after finishing The last of usI got an email from Sony inviting me to play the next one Destiny alpha. I’ve always been more than one call of Duty growing child, but many of my childhood friends were HUGE Alone fan. When I asked them about Bungie’s next project with Destinyeveryone encouraged me to try it out, describing the game as a mashup of call of Duty, Aloneand “Space Skyrim. ” I decided to try the alpha shortly after and was immediately hooked. The shooting was by far the best I’ve ever seen. And now, more than eight years later, I’m still hopelessly addicted Destiny since it was the first time I landed in the Cosmodrome.

A first day player, I love to see him! What kind of content do you like to focus on when streaming or making videos?

I like to focus on the endgame content within Destiny, with a more focus on the PvP side, whether it’s Trials of Osiris or Iron Banner. I also love GM Nightfalls and raids, and especially savoring the first day raid experiences with my group!

It’s super cool! Endgame content can be so challenging, so having content creators like you to help teach and guide others is really cool to see. For those new players, what is something you would like to know before starting, or at least at the beginning, of yours Destiny voyage?

Honestly, I wish someone had told me how absorbed I would be Destiny universe and the larger Bungie community. How can I play the same game again after eight years ?! Ahahah, just kidding =). But in all seriousness, I would like to know how important it was to find a solid group of people to play with Destiny with. I played solo for a fair amount of time during vanilla D1 before finding my way to the LFG (Looking for Group) websites. If I hadn’t been captivated by the magic of OG Vault of Glass, there’s a good chance I would have stopped playing Destiny during those early days. The game is immensely more fun to play when you have friends with whom to dive into more difficult content and bounce builds and ideas. For this reason, I am incredibly excited about the arrival of Guardian Ranks and Fireteam Finder in-game Destiny 2 next year. I think they will serve as catalysts for thousands of players to start forming groups of their own friends and unlock the real “endgame” of Destiny.

Cabbage yes! With endgame content at the center of attention, do you have any tips for players looking to improve their skills as gamers?

If you are someone who wants to dive deeper into the end game experiences in Destiny and improve your skills, the absolute best thing you can do is reach out to other players and start building a group of friends you can play with Destiny with. While Destiny can be played alone, the full potential of the game is realized when you have an established group of people you can lean on, whether in casual PvE environments or in the Trials trenches. Teamwork really makes the dream work and over time you will become a better player by teaming up with other like-minded players.

Okay, it’s time to ask, what is your main character and your favorite subclass?

I’ll probably attract a lot of anger here, but Hunter is my main character and I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Stompees for most of the past five years. Going back to Modern Warfare 2, my favorite way to play FPS games has always been by speed, speed, and more speed! To that end, I am absolutely IN LOVE with Arc 3.0 Hunter. The Speed Booster is just * the chef’s kiss * and Gathering Storm just might be the coolest Super in the game now. I was used to doing Arcstrider main from seasons 2 to 8, so coming home to my old baby with Arc 3.0 was great!

Oh yes, going fast in video games is always fun! 😊 What kind of vibe does your channel maintain?

My channel tends to walk the line between entertainment AND education. In a moment, we will dive deep into the tradition of of destiny universe and start speculating on future stories to come. Then in the next, something completely ridiculous will happen within a Crucible match (at the expense of my opponent OR myself, both happen often!). We’ll often talk about the build or the state of the game as a whole, all while keeping things rather lighthearted with lots of laughs along the way. Just like the balance between my work life and content creation, my channel thrives on its duality between education and entertainment.

Fun and educational while keeping it carefree? Seems like my kind of place!

Okay, the time has come to wrap up our interview, but I wanted to ask you because so far you have been truly inspiring in our conversation. What is something you want to make sure each New Light knows when they join the ranks of the Guardians?

With the current New Light experience, it can feel overwhelming once your introduction to the Cosmodrome is over. You are summoned to the Towe and are presented with one mission after another. My advice would be to choose only ONE of those missions and engage in it yourself. By the time you finish the first mission, there is a good chance that you will have tried out some new weapons, increased your power a bit, and generally had an idea of the game cycle of Destiny. And once most people get that far, the gameplay alone is usually enough to get them hooked!

For more specific tips, 1000% start using Destiny Item Manager for a significantly improved inventory experience. That, and be sure to check back every day with Ada-1 for those sweet, sweet fighting mods!

And finally, where can people find you?

I stream on Twitch every Saturday and Sunday morning, with the occasional upload of videos to YouTube. I am also very active in the country of Twitterwith lots of hot filming and cheating to entertain anyone!
Thank you so much Kujay for hanging out with me! Make sure you check out his channels and follow up if you feel up to him with content. If you haven’t checked out our newest Community Focus with Leyla, you can do it now! And until next time, keep tagging us with your Community Focus recommendations on our social channels.

Be smart, Guardians!
