Cervélo resurrects the Soloist as a cheaper and more aerodynamic all-rounder

The new Cervélo Soloist takes the brand’s vast design knowledge and packs it into a package described as an aero racing bike that’s easy to live with and quick to ride.

The new Soloist is aimed at amateur racers and this is reflected in the specifications of the range. The higher spec solo has Ultegra Di2 and the range starts with a Shimano 105 mechanical edition.

Cervélo says the Soloist is a little lighter than the aero bike Cervélo S5 or the all-rounder Cervélo R5, while being significantly cheaper than both of these flagship, WorldTour-level bikes.

The Soloist frame combines the shapes of Kammtail tubes for the seat tube and down tube, with slightly lowered chainstays at the rear and a dedicated aero seatpost.

Up front, there’s a sculpted head tube that routes the brake hoses and cables inside. The absence of complex integration makes servicing and replacing parts on the Soloist easier than on some of the better road bikes.

A new threaded bottom bracket adds to the idea that the Soloist is a bike for amateur rather than pro riders with a behind-the-scenes mechanic on hand.

New highlights from Cervélo Solo

  • Geometry mirrors the R5 racing bike

The solo legend

The Soloist debuted 20 years ago.
Brain

It has been 20 years since the original Soloist league debuted. In 2002, the Soloist was a revolutionary frame design.

Rather than being mere approximations, the extruded aluminum tubes were based on real airfoils derived from the NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics).

The Soloist and his success with Team CSC have set the standard for aerodynamic road bike design. The original Soloist was actually the genesis of the modern aero road bike, something that has been part of the Cervélo lineup ever since.

Easy to live, easy to pack

The soloist is UCI compliant.
Brain

The soloist is not a competitor for the S5 or R5. Instead, the new bike is meant to sit between the two and reach for a lower price. In Cervélo’s words, the new Soloist is for “the weekly amateur runner”.

With the new S5 it might be much easier to live with than the previous generation, but it still has a complex one-piece cockpit that makes riding the bike a little more challenging.

On the Soloist, you still have the cable routing hidden under the stem and through the bearing cap on the head tube, but the cables and hoses do not go through the stem.

This means that packing the bike in a bike bag doesn’t require splitting hoses, bleeding brakes, and all those things a mechanic would take care of for a professional cyclist.

Get the right BB

The bike uses the same bottom bracket design as Cervélo’s R5-CX.
Brain

In a further attempt at simplicity, Cervélo chose to use its BBright-47 bottom bracket, which debuted on the brand’s R5-CX cyclocross bike.

The new BBright-47 is a continuation of Cervélo’s long-standing asymmetrical press-fit design that debuted on its Project California R5Ca in 2010.

The asymmetry remains, but the interface now mirrors the increasingly popular T47 threaded bottom bracket standard.

This means an inner cup on the left side and an outer cup on the right. It is a similar solution to the one introduced by Factor on its latest generation Ostro VAM.

Cervélo says this bottom bracket design helps ensure optimal chainline and drivetrain efficiency, but with the ease of maintenance and replacement that comes with a threaded bottom shell.

A more versatile design?

The bike has clearance for 34mm tires.
Brain

The Soloist is designed to bring versatility to the table. The frame has clearance for tires up to 34mm, which is great for a streamlined road bike.

While the new R5 can also be fitted with 34mm tires, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some of Cervélo’s pro riders opt for the Soloist in the Spring Classics.

The geometry of the Soloist mirrors the S5, so expect the Soloist to be able to handle as well as the agile R5 when the roads start to get winding.

Cervélo Soloist specifications and prices

The bike is available in three colors, including this Gold Dust finish.
Brain

For a premium brand like Cervélo, we would have expected a range of bikes equipped with high-end kits, such as the £ 12,999 Cervélo S5 Red AXS.

However, the Soloist range completes with a bike equipped with Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 and starts with a mechanical Shimano 105.

Builds with Shimano 105 Di2, SRAM Rival AXS eTap and SRAM Force AXS eTap are also available.

If you want to build your own Soloist, the frame set is available separately in each color: Alpenglow (white), Embers (black) and Gold Dust (metal flake gold metallic).
