Rap star Jay-Z, otherwise known as Shawn Carter, and Block CEO Jack Dorsey recently tossed bitcoin to members of the Brooklyn-based Bitcoin Academy. Jay-Z’s mother Gloria Carter explained in a statement that a myriad of Bedford-Stuyvesant residents in Brooklyn attended and more than 350 people attended cryptography classes.
Hundreds of Brooklyn Residents Attend Bitcoin Academy – Some Participants Signed Up for a $ 1,000 in Bitcoin Grant
During the first week of June, Bitcoin.com News reported that Jack Dorsey and Jay-Z partnered to launch the Bitcoin Academy in Brooklyn for Marcy House residents. A Business Insider report details that the academy’s classes have seen hundreds of people. “Marcy’s residents showed up,” Jay-Z’s mother Gloria Carter told the publication. “The more than 350 people who attended The Bitcoin Academy classes have let us know that this education is important to them and that it matters,” she added.
The report further discussed the project with a Marcy House resident who attended the lectures. Additionally, upon completion of the courses, Bedford-Stuyvesant residents could sign up for a scholarship that awards each person $ 1,000 in bitcoin (BTC) sent to their Cashapp or Munn Wallet. The 12-week educational course was free exclusively for Brooklyn residents of Marcy House. Mariela Regalado, a resident of Marcy, said the academy reminded her of when she watched Jay-Z grow up in the neighborhood.
“I remember when I was younger, growing up in the project, [Jay-Z] and his team would come and give us toys and stuff, “Regalado told Business Insider.” My friends and I would call it this kind of ‘hood philanthropy’, so for me it’s kind of an evolution from that. ” Regalado also specified that the academy offered a free nursery school for her daughter and as a single mother she was able to attend the courses. Regalado added:
[The classes were] purely this educational and fun trip that I dealt with my neighbors. It always seemed to me [we were] at a family dinner, and like that cousin who discovered Bitcoin he talks about it to everyone else.
Bitcoin Academy instructor breaks it down “into a vernacular that others can understand”
Bitcoin Academy in Brooklyn was also supported by Crypto Blockchain Plug (Najah J. Roberts) and Black Bitcoin Billionaire (Lamar Wilson). Wilson was an instructor and the person who connected with Block CEO Jack Dorsey to propose the program. The courses taught included subjects such as “Careers in Crypto”, “Wealth Building and Assets”, “Bitcoin & Taxes” and “Why Decentralization Matters”.
“A lot of times, the information doesn’t reach our community. Not because people are intentionally discriminating, it’s because they are not intentional in getting the information there. And then someone has to pick up the cloak and do it, ”Wilson said. The Brooklyn Bitcoin Academy instructor added:
Since I understand the information and can break it down into a vernacular that others can understand, particularly the people where I come from, I feel it’s almost my obligation to make sure I give them the information, and that’s not how I advise them to buy bitcoin or try to get them to invest all their money or something. It really is, let me give you the information and let you, as a very intelligent being, make your own decisions.
