According to IDC, worldwide shipments of PCs and tablets are expected to decline in 2022 and 2023 in difficult market conditions

NEEDHAM, Mass, September 1, 2022 – According to a new forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, tumultuous times are looming for the PC and tablet markets. Global traditional PC shipments are projected to decline 12.8% in 2022 to 305.3 million units, while tablet shipments will decline 6.8% to 156.8 million. Inflation, the weakening of the global economy and the surge in purchases over the past two years are the main causes of the worsening outlook.

A further contraction is also expected in 2023, as consumer demand has slowed, demand for education has been largely met, and business demand is pushed out due to worsening macroeconomic conditions. The combined PC and tablet market is expected to decline by 2.6% in 2023 before returning to growth in 2024.

“Although demand is slowing, the outlook for shipments remains above pre-pandemic levels,” said Jitesh Ubrani, head of research for IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “Long-term demand will be driven by a slow economic recovery combined with an enterprise hardware upgrade as support for Windows 10 draws to a close. Educational deployments and hybrid work are also expected to become a pillar for increasing volumes. “.

“As economic headwinds rise, we expect worsening consumer sentiment to translate into further consumer market contractions over the next six quarters,” added Linn Huang, vice president of research, Devices & Displays. “The economic recovery in time for the next major upgrade cycle could spur some growth in the last few years of our forecasts. Although volumes will not reach the pandemic peaks, we expect the consumer market to move towards the higher end of the market. “.
